Which brings back my argument, the reason you install an antivirus in your computer is because of the real-time scanner (the main module in an antivirus). Otherwise an online or command-line scanner will be fine for you.
I like Virus Total, let's you analyze a file over different antivirus and antimalware tools without installing any of them.
For offline i prefer Avira AntiVir Command Line Scanner. AVG can be run through a Live CD, i just haven't done yet. Tried Clamwin once, but last time i checked it only detected half the stuff a computer had. I moved my clients from AVG to Avast a month ago, what you said and game mode in an antivirus is really useful.
