Battle Balls (Senkyu) Seibu games not loading, stuck on 'updating' screen. Any ideas?

Battle Balls is the best example of this. When you load it, it seems to think that it is reflashing - it counts down a timer, and asks you to swap the JP1 setting and reset.
Of course, doing so doesn't do anything, as the system doesn't re-flash.
Has anyone gotten any of the Battle Balls games to work?
(apologies for my first post being a question, I'm normally just a lurker..)
