It seems like an odd reaction, but I guess credit card fraud was less prevalent in the '80s. Did you at least dispute the charge?

I had one when I first started out, because they gave me a better rate than Visa. It was OK, but I always found I'd run into places that didn't take it at the worst possible moments. Once I had enough credit to get a decent rate from Visa, I dumped it and never looked back.
