True , I should have asked:
"Does this mathematical fact apply to this game, or did the game code around it?"

Example, the game might have defined 127 or 128 as the center in the code logic (such as "if value is greater than 127 else if less than 127"). Or the game might be coded as if instead of 0-255, the range was 1-255 making 128 the mathematical center. OTOH, the game could have used the fact and have 127 as look right, and 128 as look left.

Either way, why is the character looking only right, and not down/right? (Both axes are reversed, so unlike most games, right and down are the lower numbers, and mame has both centering at 127.)

Yeah, if there's any deadzone at all. Since the original game had analog sticks, probably with flaky atari POTs and flaky variable centers anyway, the coders might have expected the player to lightly press (within the lookzone) in the direction he wanted to throw, and so coded no deadzone and thus not coded to continue looking the last direction before entering the (non-existing) deadzone. Which goes back to the "general rule vs game specific" of "what is center?"
