It’s more likely to go the other way, and have hiscore.dat removed from the MAME distribution. It’s very rarely in sync with MAME, and not something that we expect developers to care about maintaining. Either the plugin and dat file will go to the mame-goodies repository, or the plugin will stay in the MAME distribution but require you to supply your own dat file.
