Mastodon was a bit shit when I last looked at it (around the time Elon bought Twitter)
But yeah, Twitter is in the gutter right now. I'm surprised Elon even wants his name associated with it after the Sub 'incident' as he's in a similar industry, and Twitter is highlighting how his standards are possibly even lower than those at OceanGate and his decision making even worse.
I suspect his intention was always to kill the platform, but it's doing his own reputation no favours.
