Wiimotes as Light Guns, or other low-cost Light Gun Solutions?

Hello. Please forgive the wall of text that follows.
I've recently gotten started with MAME again, and I'd like to get some proper light gun gaming in. However, my old EMS Topgun III no longer works, both on software and hardware standpoints, and light guns like an Aimtrak or the Sinden are currently out of my budget. I've been attempting to get Wiimotes to work as light guns, but with limited success.
I've used both Winremote and Touchmote as bridges for the Wiimote to communicate with my PC, and MAME doesn't seem to recognize the input from either one as a separate mouse (multimouse is on, as my trackball is detected as mouse 2). I've had partial success with Touchmote, but I can only get a Touchmote-connected wiimote to act as a joystick in MAME, which leads to diagonal movements often getting rendered as either horizontal or vertical, not the best for target acquisition.
As for hardware, it's a Nintendo-brabded wiimote and a generic wireless IR bar that I'm using, alongside a Bluetooth USB adapter. Is this something that could be fixed in software, either through MAME itself or using a different program to help the Wiimote communicate with the PC, or is this a hardware issue? I've seen reports of the Mayflash Dolphin bar used foe this, does anyone have any experience with it?
Any advice is appreciated; thank you for your time and patience.
