What does MAME choose for Joystick map when "auto" is selected?
07/16/22 12:29 AM

Can anyone tell me what MAME does when "auto" is selected on the Joystic Map?

I show the following as what (should be IMHO) the default Joystick Maps for different controllers. But what does MAME do when it is set to "auto"? Does MAME somehow lookup the "type" of controller (4-Way, 8-Way, etc) and set values as per this table?

Joystick Name Joystick Map
auto auto
2-Way/Standard 4445
4-Way/Standard s8.4s8.44s8.4445
8-Way/Standard 7778...4445

Or does it just set a default map? If so, what map gets loaded?

Wondering if I should go to all the trouble to set individual maps for the 200+ games I've got loaded into my "best of" Arcade - or if MAME is setting the right values on "auto".

It may just be in my head: But PACMAN, for instance, played on "auto" seems MUCH less accurate than playing PACMAN with the "s8.4s8.44s8.4445" map loaded.

MAME docs are not much help in this issue, which seems odd.

Any help, appreciated.
