MAME preserves literally anything as long as the ROMs exist and there is someone to write code to make them run, there is no limit in what MAME can emulate.

That five-digit number will probably double once LaserDisc/CD/DVD/BD drives, VCR and TV firmware images are added and the devices are emulated. Yes, you will eventually be able to play that really crude version of Tetris built into the OSD of an emulated 90s CRT TV (or for bonus points, having an emulated console like the NES output a composite signal and having another instance of MAME running the TV and picking it up).

As for games, just wait until MAME converts all of the Redump.org dat files to software lists, that 13900 will be more like 100000. There are currently 84476 discs preserved according to Redump's database. Some of those games (for example, PS3) probably won't be emulated in MAME for another twenty years, but at least the data is preserved (never mind the fact that other emulators also use the CHD format these days as it beats a raw uncompressed file).
