I feel bad for having to give an answer like this, but there really isn't much, except for some basic documentation mixed with the netlist source code and some netlist example files (many of which have gotten stale and will need some tinkering to run). Of course, there are the existing MAME netlists to follow--look for nl_*.cpp files in src/mame/audio and src/mame/machine. But the learning curve is still quite steep--you have to be willing to go with the barest of guidance, get your hands dirty and experiment.
Experience with other circuit simulators, such as one of the SPICE versions, can be useful. SPICE's learning curve is even steeper than netlist, but it has been heavily documented over the years. Paul Falstad's neat little online Javascript simulator (http://www.falstad.com/circuit/ or http://lushprojects.com/circuitjs/) is an excellent way to help learn about how these things work, as long as you keep its limitations in mind.
