If this configuration it's not working anymore, all you have to do it's to create a new one. Run mame > configure options > general inputs > player 1 controls / player 2 controls.
After you finish mapping your joystick, copy the file default.cfg to your ctrlr folder and run some tests loading the file with mame game -ctrlr default.
After you done messing with it, name it whatever you want. To make it load with every arcade game you have, add ctrlr default(or whatever name you choose) inside ini/arcade.ini file.
