Some machines/cabinets had a literal credit button, where the coins inserted didn't actually trigger as credits until it was pressed. There used to be a Tekken 2 Ver.A like that at my local bowling alley where you had to press the credit button after inserting coins (when coins were inserted the button would light up) before the game itself would credit up, the button was next to the the start button below the monitor. This was around 1996/97 when the game was still relatively new (and yes, the place also had a Tekken 1 in the same cabinet, complete with the ridiculous mouth-opened pose of Marshall Law on the side, same credit button deal on that one too).

If that's not the thing, it could be referring to the 1P/2P start buttons, or maybe even a service credit switch (usually mapped to 9, if MSH actually has one). The button mapped to 5 is usually the coin input only.
