Once a machine has been declared working, it is assumed that in most cases it would be able to continue to work. Even in regressed state, the game is supposed to work. In rare instances were MAME had to add a MACHINE_NOT_WORKING flag or similar flag for graphics/sound, it is after a great deal of development effort and inability to fix those long-standing regressions (or forever acting) issues. These are on a case by case basis.
