Ooh! This is exactly what I needed. Thanks for that BIOS-D

mame64 crvision -listxml > Creativision.xml

I then thumbed through the resultant file and...
< control type="joy" player="1" buttons="2" ways="8"/ >
So yep. That looks wrong. Guess I'll be off to raise a bug report :-)
