pfeMAME version 2.8.1 has been released today

This is another important release. Some further improvement to slot configurations for systems, some display / drawing improvements, a number of bug fixes, etc. I also think that my previous bundle for Windows may have been an issue. Recently I checked it and found it was reporting the wrong version of python in the log file. Then I found it was actually hooking into the local install of python rather than the bundled copy. This means if you didn’t have python installed on your system it may have thrown an error - this is not right and I believe it’s due to me trying out the build features in PyCharm which is the editor I use. Anyway, I have independently checked this release on a virtual machine without native python installed and it seems to work.

Slot options are still proving a difficult thing to implement correctly across all situations. There are inconsistencies in the way that XML data is configured for some systems (PC's seem to be the worst) - sometimes a cascading method is used to allow cascaded devices to be configured, and then sometimes a non-cascaded method is used - as you can imagine this is difficult for code to understand. That said, I think the current slot configuration implementation is pretty stable. I would really appreciate some feedback on this. As per the last release, if you have any issues with a slot configuration (the program wont load in MAME, pfeMAME preferences won’t work anymore, or pfeMAME crashes or wont load, track down the game.ini file (should be located in your INI folder) and delete it.

Check out the changelog for more details on all of the changes and improvements.

Please note that I don’t have enough time at the moment to build the Linux release. Should be ready soon though.

You can download this release from HERE. Builds are available for 64bit Windows and Linux and the source code is also available.

Please read the manual as it has everything you need. Please report bugs. You can email [email protected] or use the features on the sourceforge site to create a ticket, leave a review, or chat.

pfeMAME is a front end for the Multiple Arcade Game Emulator (MAME) written in Python. It is cross platform (tested on Linux - Ubuntu and Windows). It also includes a graphical Tile View designed for MAME cabinets which allows control using joystick / gamepad. It supports favourite game flagging, MESS systems, and a Tiled view for arcade cabinets. It was written with a minimalist view in mind but also because there were some features I wanted that other front ends just didn't provide.
