It's all about getting you to have an account so they can use your details for advertising tho.
At least on the PC there is competition, unlike on the consoles, where you see almost 10 year old games still at launch price unless you're willing to tie them to a subscription.
The competition does mean that on the PC things can be priced fairly, although yeah, anything that wants to install more 'always running' software on my PC gets am instant 'no' from me (not sure if that's the case here, haven't checked, not really interested)
The amount Steam takes as a cut is daylight robbery, so you can also understand why other developers are going to be lured to stores that (for now) promise to take less.
