yeah, he picked it up because he's been studying Tourvision for years, and this was a similar, but much cruder thing for the SNES.
locking out start with external timer circuits is easy tho, and I've seen practically every console hooked up that way, it's much more interesting when the actual games are re-coded to support it as often you're having to change code flow (jumping back to title screen so that game can be started if coins are inserted during the demo etc.) because it was never designed to work like that.
