Ready Player 1: another great book title that inspired an unrelated movie by the same name.

OK movie story, but not the same story as the book... at all. Basically, an entirely other story with three keys, and a group of kids battling a corporation for the big prize.

No need to worry about movie spoilers in this discussion, because none of this from the book is in the movie:

1. Any and all scenes or even reference to his being in school online in the OASIS.
2. The original challenges to earn a first key: the D&D Tomb of Horrors and War Games, Acererak and Joust.
3. Wade assuming the pseudonym Bryce Lynch and all the plot twists that evolve out of this decision.
4. Repeatedly revisiting Halliday's childhood home for clues.
5. Earning the extra-life coin in Pacman.
6. The Planet Froboz and ZORK and Captain Crunch all hiding the second key.
6. Daito being killed in real life.
8. Entering the second key through the Voight-Kampff machine from Blade Runner, playing Black Tiger, and Rush.
9. Bryce Lynch getting himself arrested into indentured servitude to the IOI on purpose, and obtaining the intel that will lead to the downfall of the IOI from within, while also setting up the robot that will later be revealed to take down the Orb of Osuvox.
10. Playing Tempest and King Arthur from The Holy Grail for the third key.
11. The symbolic plot point of needing three keys turned by three players working together simultaneously, while reciting the key phrase to open the final gate.
12. The big reveal of Art3mis being reserved until the resolution at the end.

Soooo.. yeah, an entirely other story with three keys, and a group of kids battling a corporation for the big prize.

My take on that is this: the bigger the ego of the director/producer, the less they follow the book they are supposed to be making into a movie, so their ego can say "THAT is my story, not the author's." Spielberg? You don't get bigger than that.

I went in expecting to see the magic of the book onscreen.

Same fate befell Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children under big-headed Tim Burton's thumb.

An action packed movie inspired by the book at best.
