I got it working under my Steam link by configuring the joystick under MAME in front of my PC then launching MAME on the steam link...

When i did the configuration, i think my inputs where registered directly from my steam link, so i guess i was lucky there is not a great distance beetwen my TV and my office where my desktop PC is.
