I'd give them credit for being wireless earbuds that actually don't have wires, rather than the normal ones that are still wired to each other, but on searching I find Amazon lists half a dozen or more that also manage that, for less money. (Ignore the popular result that shows two for under $20 but is really just two angles of the single piece.) There are more expensive ones, as well. Others seem to be offering the complaint that they'll get lost because Apple's design doesn't fit ears properly, but I've no experience with that.
It comes down to quality, and sound quality in particular. Apple hasn't seemed concerned with sound in the past. They bought Beats, after all. This time they're focusing on that microchip.
I remember way back, one of their best-sounding iPods was supposedly not intentional. I think the story was that they used a smaller, cheaper component to shrink things down for the mini, and it was more suited to the task. I doubt I could find anything about it today.
