need help with chdman

Trying to backup a harddrive using chdman.
i am using an old windows xp.
Got latest and older version of chdman.
I use the command as...
chdman.exe createhd -i \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE0 -o test.chd

i always get a fatal error 1,
unable to open the file "\\.\PHYSICALDRIVE0"

what am i doing wrong???
