You've got more variety in options in Terraria than you would have in Minecraft, as far as that goes.

Minecraft lacks the unending series of boss battles. There are only two of those, and both happen only when you expressly want them to (unless someone builds a Wither in your house).
So after the initial couple nights when you need to secure food and shelter, the game only threatens harm when you allow it to. It's otherwise all building stuff.
Oh, wait, there is that one new skeletal event that snuck up on me by being behind me when I exited a stairwell up from my tool repair dungeon.
You do kind of need to set limits, yes. Games come after reducing my DVR backlog to 50% of available space when allocating free time, and there are usually no more than two games competing for that time. Keep that timer set if there's anything else you're doing with the night.

Looking at No Man's Sky. I am, or had been (not sure) contemplating actually spending that much on the game, even though my favorite games have all been purchased for under $20 and I've been disappointed by any pricier games I've purchased (well, there hasn't been one since Skyrim that I paid more than $30 for). As it nears launch, it looks less impressive, so.... I don't know.
