For the cows, axes are the way to go.

Axes were made viable weapons. An axe with Mending should sit in a chest near the culling pen. With care it will never wear out.
I do wish I could make that cooldown bar more visible, but I don't feel like editing it (though I'm sure it would be easy to change to a colored ring like some other games have).
