Re: Getting a laptop, would their be any cons in using WI-FI for torrenting ?

I use wifi for torrenting all the time. None of my PCs are direct wired to my router. If you find that it's using up all your bandwidth, you can adjust the download bandwidth usage in your bittorrent client so it doesn't hog it all.

When you download a new torrent on top of an old torrent, the "checking" part doesn't use any bandwidth. The new torrent file has a list of file "pieces" with lengths and checksums and the bittorrent client uses this to verify which pieces you currently have that are valid before it starts downloading the missing pieces. With a very large multi-gigabyte torrent, this can take a long time. The checking is done entirely on the local machine.

The only problems I can see with using a laptop are running out of disk space, running out of battery power if you don't keep it plugged in, and *maybe* issues with the wireless overheating and losing connection if the laptop has a poorly designed wifi chip/adapter.

What kinds of problems were you anticipating?
