In current MAME 0.172 attempt, The shifter artwork to the lower right starts in LOW and when I start the game and drive it is apparent I'm in low gear with fast acceleration. Then, hitting SHIFT then changes it to HIGH and the car reacts as expected allowing for even faster speeds. I cannot confirm.
