Question about setting up MAME.

I have been working this past week on setting up MAME (with Hyperspin 1.4 and RocketLauncher) on a PC. Some things don't run and some don't run correctly.

What is the best version of MAME to run? And how do you tell what version a rom is...i.e. to make sure it matches the version MAME you are running or does it have to match? I have seen MAME versions like MAME32, MAME64, MAME142, MAME147b...etc. All that get a little confusing.

If these are questions that cannot be asked please remove this thread.
