In your examples, the soccer players need to keep scoring goals to be useful as soccer players. The architects need to make stable bridges to be useful as architects. Workers need to show up 9 to 5 to be useful as workers (that's arguable). On the other hand, I firmly believe that actresses who have/had hot bodies but can contribute more as actresses (while she's not Judi Dench or anything like that, she's more than capable as actress) need to keep those hot bodies to get roles which sometimes are nothing but decoration. And those actresses have the right to bitch about it.

However, and to balance the thing, I'd say that the same happens in the actors' side, specially lately in the superhero movies. Look at the bodies attained by Henry Cavill, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Hugh Jackman (totally overdone in Days Of Future Past), Tom Cruise in the last 3 MI movies, etc. This has happened during all of cinema's history, where "only talent" has been reserved for a few. The rest had to have both. And if you look at many cast lists of superproductions and blockbusters, actresses are often relegated to decoration or support roles with limited or very limited interaction (see Alison Bechdel's test) compared to their male counterparts.

So while I haven't read the exact words of miss Fisher, I have no doubt she's pretty much bitching about something that has been part of the cinema's industry for all this time, where the industry prefers continent over content, flavor over substance, looks over talent.

Despite that, I claim that it plagues the visible part of the industry, the large movie producers and such. The ones who put big bucks on the table and don't want to risk them because they are not making art, but a product. Beyond that, there are a bunch of filmmakers doing the same as always and pretty much in the same way as always, repeating the same stuff over and over and making forgettable films. But among and beyond that, again, there's a realm of totally unknown stuff that most of us never head of, and from time to time a cool film falls in our hands which can still surprise us, showing that creativity and talent are still out thereand they don't need millions in CG nor perfect bodies to be jewels waiting to be discovered. Below, Trollhunter, Alien Raiders, The Red Lantern, Last Life in the Universe, to name a few.

However, when I do a weekend marathon with my friend (10-11 movies in 48 hours), I admit that half of what we watch are products of the same cinema industry we often criticize. Because sometimes you also prefer flavor over substance, and you don't watch Andrew's post due to the personality of the girls he attaches to them...

(Said all this, I didn't want to criticize your post, just giving you a perspective of why probably she's bitching.)

And now, for some flavor.
