The only freeze I saw is when you run with cheats active.. seems to sit there for a while showing INITIALIZING.. while the stack crawl is produced, but after a while the game does start. The console window shows that the cheat region name has changed ('maincpu' is now 'mainpcb', in this case) - leaving the problem of fixing it in the hands of the cheat XML maintainer, not MAMEDEV.
