Grand Theft Auto III had an option to do just that even back in 2001 (or 2002, at least with the PC version). Can't remember if the PS2 or Xbox versions supported widescreen TVs or not.
Another oddity with GTA3 was with any resolution with a width of 1280. That was hard coded to 5:4 regardless of the aspect ratio of the screen; using square pixel resolutions of 1280x960 or 1280x720 would make the game look like crap (and of course, using 1280x1024 on a 4:3 CRT monitor would also look like crap and would get you labeled as a douche for doing so).
