Have been re-watching The X-Files lately...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unusual_Suspects
So, airdate for this episode is November 16, 1997... takes place at a computer and electronics show in Baltimore in 1989. Episode is told in flashbacks, mainly from the point of view of Byers (Bruce Harwood).
... That said, when Byers flashes back to the computer and electronic show, he starts the story explaining how he's a FCC representative and they have a booth there. His partner helping to run the booth is sitting at a desktop computer, and the guy's playing Dig-Dug for a good portion of the episode. And it looks fairly legit.
It's definitely not the PC Booter version. http://www.mobygames.com/game/pc-booter/dig-dug/screenshots
So if I had to guess... a. it could be an emulator. MAME or something else (M-Ulator? Replay?) http://caesar.logiqx.com/php/game_group.php?id=digdug#digdugat1 b. it could be a port or a remake, such as Microsoft Return of Arcade. It's definitely full-screen, not windowed, but I think the Microsoft games permitted that. The Wikipedia article on this Microsoft program states it is a remake... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Arcade c. it could be stock footage played through the computer monitor via special effects.
If I had to guess... I would say b.
Still, while the Wikipedia article says they went to great effort to make "Unusual Suspects" accurate to 1989... looks like they messed up here.
We've probably talked about this before long ago at MAME.net...
