Unrelated. Which is why I joked "Your move, 3DArcade" implying that they would be competition. 
It's a cool project, but the inability to replace MAME with another MAME.exe is probably a dealbreaker for me. 3DArcade is still more a "true" frontend. The main reason this new project includes its own MAME is so it can display emulation within the 3D world without leaving the 3D world.
