When HLSL was introduced, I was the owner of an on board GeForce 6100 with an Athlon X2 4400. Performance with HLSL enabled caused all games (no matter who fast otherwise) to require Frameskip of 6-8 to even function at 100% speed. Not optimal at all but babe minimum yes. Since then, I think, the bar might have been raised.
There is a problem too with XP, 32-bit and GeForce recent drivers causing crashes and blue screens. If you have an older driver, (circa 2009-2010) try that one with MAME.
Ditto. I had the same problem with my GeForce 6150 n430 machine. Found the original drivers, and I was back in business. It is very slow on raster games+HLSL, though, and only runs a handful of vector games with glow at full speed. However, my GeForce 6200 128mb, runs faster (it is an NV43 A, though, and I have 8pp/3vp versus the stock 4/2). So your card should be fucking plenty, even at 1280x1024.
Here's the thing, though: HLSL scaling at 800x600 looks like ass. (Vector is unaffected and looks great.) You need at least 1024x768.
Scifi frauds. SF illuminates.
