Help with DEMUL
09/09/14 05:58 AM

Hey everybody!

So, I hope this is in the right forum/subforum. I need help troubleshooting DEMUL, the best (only?) NAOMI/NAOMI2, Sammy Atomiswave emulator. See, when I initially set up, I was unaware of the arcade systems other than MAME. Then I saw this game in the theater (Star Wars Trilogy) and was blown away. I wanted to play it, but saw it was incompatible (at the time) with MAME. So I went on a little adventure to see if something else could run it. That was when I learned about other arcade systems like Sega Model 2, Model 3, NAOMI, etc. I was able to fulfill my dream with Supermodel 3 and could once again play this game. I'm a bit obsessive on collections, so I had to emulate everything I could. That lead me to DEMUL for NAOMI and Atomiswave.

ANYWAY, disregard all that ^^^ if you don't care about past history.

Initially, I've been using DEMUL 0.57, and the DX11 gpu driver. It's been running great. I was pleased to learn the DEMUL has had 3 updates since the last time I checked, and it has added many new games. So I erased my DEMUL folder, redownloaded the newest version (0.582), and extracted it. After setting everything up EXACTLY like it was before, I tried to load a game I knew worked. Crap city. The DX11 driver now renders a menu bar at the top of the screen (when running full screen) and it is extremely slow on my system. I think it could be the driver, as my videocard (as far as I know) is only DX10. So, I downgraded the driver to DX10. The emulator runs great now in windowed mode, but when I'm in full screen, the aspect ratio is squished to like 2:3 instead of 4:3 (more taller than wide). I need to figure out the catch. DX11 driver is pretty much incompatible with my system, it's slow and choppy and stuttery. DX10 works great but not in full screen mode (which is the mode I prefer with GameEx).

Things I have tried include changing the gpu driver, changing various resolutions, changing the aspect ratio's (4:3, 16:9, stretch). Everything I've tired results in the same thing. DX10 is great in window, squished in full screen, DX11 slow and unplayable. As an experiment today when I got home from work, I tried using DEMUL 0.581 (as opposed to the latest 0.582. Going through all manners of testing, I get the same results as I do in 0.582. For the hell of it, I tried 0.58 too, and it does the exact same thing. However, if I use 0.57, everything works great as it always did. I don't change anything in the settings between 0.57 and 0.58+. The driver is apparently being changed though. I thought I'd be sneaky and use 0.582 with the 0.57 drivers, but it causes DEMUL to crash when starting the ROM.

So has anybody else noticed this problem with DEMUL? Is there a solution out there I've not come up with? In the GameEx support thread I made, it was pointed out to me that this KNOWN BUG is not going to be fixed, as the DX10 driver will no longer be supported. Kinda crappy if you ask me. If you're going to force everybody to use DX11, why include DX10 in the package? Sounds to me like they just don't want to spend a minute to go in and do an aspect ratio adjustment in the .dll. So what's your take? Can you help me?
