I caught Stalker in the middle, some time early in high school. I got it, though I wasn't into the low production value element, although there's merit in the 'imagination' part. Solarys I haven't seen; Solaris I have seen, and while it apparently isn't the match of the original, I liked it. It's SF - couched in a love story.
2001 is basic SF. I think the book isn't any different - except it's probably longer.
Scifi frauds. SF illuminates.
