Q-Bert diagonal control

I like Q-Bert but MAME's input does not allow you to map the controls diagonally. The game is not desirable to me if I have to use the current control input. Is there a hack available or any other way? Ya know how there is a 8-way joystick hack available for games like Ikari Warrior 3. Well, is there a diagonally hack for Q-Bert or some other way?
