Monitor looks better through VGA than HDMI?

I have a Radeon 7850 graphics card that has an HDMI out, so I decided try using a TV as my monitor. When I connected it with the HDMI cable, the picture didn't look very good, like all the text had jaggies. At first I thought maybe it was a crappy TV, but then when I connected it through VGA, it looked much better. Is that unusual? Maybe my HDMI cable is shit....
