Nintendo VS. System: Some games labeled as 2-player but only 1-player allowed?
02/21/14 02:14 AM

Greetings:

Done some research on this topic but wanted to run it by the pro's here at MAMEWorld. Excitebike and Castlevania are both listed as a 2-player games (various wikis and IAM pages below) but when running through MAME, all I can ever get is single player games that allows for both 1 and 2-player controls to work at the same time (joysticks still configured as separate).

Related Excitebike Red-Tent VS System video (John's Arcade):

According to the IAM (links above), both Excitebike and Castlevania are 2-players. In the video above from John's Arcade, at about 0:21 into the video, you can see both 1/2-player buttons flashing, although it does say at the top "ONE PLAYER GAME ONLY". The MAMETesters ticket seems to agree/conclude with the current MAME implementation.

Some of the VS. games, such as Super Mario Bros and Dr. Mario, do work as 2-player games with separate controls.

Just trying to get a clear consensus: are Excitebike and Castlevania intended to be single player with both controls available at the same time or should I be able to get an actual 2-player "alternating turns" game somehow? I'm assuming I will run across this situation with some other VS. and possibly PlayChoice games as well.

Thanks.
