MobyGames now supports Arcade entries
02/20/14 11:16 PM

MobyGames is still recovering from being a bit of a joke, an awful new user interface (since reverted) and some rather ancient stringent user-copyright guidelines (mostly reverted).

But you guys should know that they now support "Arcade" as a supported platform.

They've added a website achievement system indicating a goal to shoot for.
Current MobyGoal: 1000 Arcade games.
Progress: 81%

MobyGoal - the race to 1,000 for arcade games!

As you might recall, we set up the front page bar to make it to 1,000 arcade games in our database (a pretty daunting number, given that the platform itself was only created on January 21st), and we're pleased to announce that we're at 81% (over 800 games!) and counting, and are hoping to reach the goal this week. Amazing stuff.

(Suggestions for our next MobyGoal are welcome, although we may make it around other elements of arcade - some of the additions are fairly barebones, just adding the arcade format and almost nothing else to existing coin-op conversion entries, and while that's cool, we'd love lots more screenshots and esp. arcade-only games.)

Anyhow, many thanks for arcade tech info, screenshots, and all kinds of other info from recently contributing metadata stalwarts Marcin Ostrowski, FatherJack, Chirinea, Kabushi, Pseudo_Intellectual, Alaka, Trypticon, and newbie Mars Rulez - and a bunch of other folks I've probably forgotten!

Also a special shoutout to Evil Ryu for entering credits for a bunch of arcade titles already, including for Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and for Cadillacs & Dinosaurs - MobyGames is now basically the only service building up an arcade credits database that I've seen, which is really neat.

I was also personally super-happy to see seminal arcade title I, Robot added by Ville_R. As he notes: "I, Robot is notable for its use of solid polygon rendering, transcending the wireframe (raster or vector) graphics of previous 3D games. Another innovation is the realtime-adjustable camera angle, which plays more than a visual role: it has an effect on score (lower angles reward the player with a higher multiplier), and in some of the higher levels, must be adjusted to avoid certain enemies(!)." An amazing title created by the spectacular Owen Rubin!

Must say, I rather approve of what the new ownership is doing. Perhaps the site will get back up on its feet.
