Music volume changing in Shinobi

Not having played this for a while it seems like the music volume in Shinobi tends to change. I'm pretty sure the last time I played it it didn't have that problem (and that would've been quite a few MAME versions back).
Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me?
If you play it - it may take a while for it to happen (it's not constant), but when it happens - it's like something is slowly turning the volume down and then back up.
