Don't get me wrong, Clerks pretty much defined my senior year of high school. My friends and I watched it repeatedly, listened to the soundtrack, and quoted it endlessly. Maybe our expectations were just too high, but nothing he did afterwards ever lived up to them. None of his movies suck, per se, but most are just meh. To me, what made Clerks great was the witty, edgy dialog. Once he had a budget to work with, he seemed to get away from that, in favor of more slapstick and visual humor. I really wanted to like his later movies, but most of them just fell flat for me.
