Not even counting false alarms, a panic button smartphone app sounds inconvenient to the point of being useless.
- Take out phone and power it on - Close out of Angry Birds - Hunt through three screens and a folder to find the app - Launch the app, wait 45 seconds for it to start up - Press the panic button
I guess maybe if you're locked in a trunk or something and have some time to kill. I can get to 911 in five taps, though. It seems like that would be the better option 90% of the time.
