Help with new ctrlr file handling

I just updated to 0.151 from 0.142 and noticed that some of my game mappings were not being recognized. I traced it back to the hard-coded mappings MAME has for some games, for example, asteroid. For games that have hard-coded mappings, you cannot override those mappings with the ctrlr file. That was the case before 0.151. However, as a workaround, I could create a cfg file for that game and set the ports that had hard-coded inputs to "DEFAULT" and then MAME would pick up the mappings from my ctrlr file. When I do that now, after running the game MAME simply replaces DEFAULT with the mapping in my ctrlr file.

Is there a way to avoid MAME hard-coded mappings to override my ctrlr file or is my best bet to handle those games through individual ctrlr files?

I like to manage everything from the ctrlr file because is a single location but I can deal with individual cfg files if I have to.
