The problem with using optical out is that you now have a separate sound system that has its own remote. Plus, there's no way I'm spending that much on a speaker solution.
Assuming a get a TV with a "Variable" analog out, I plan to get something like this...

It has a manual volume control on one of the speakers, so we can set the maximum volume at the speaker. Then he's free to raise and lower the TV volume to his heart's content.
Also, it's USB powered, so it should power on/off when plugged into the TV's USB port.
