and I have a lot of reading to do. Tried a couple of different shots with it, then turned the knob to what I thought was movie mode, but held down the shutter button, waited a couple of seconds for it to be happy with focus... and it snapped a shot. Who would have thunk I'd need to get a tutorial on how to record video? 
edit: ok... fingered it out without looking at the manual. I can use the shutter button to gain focus, then use the live view button to start recording (thus the red dot next to the live-view button... same red dot on a VCR's record button. Duh...)
Just broke my personal record for number of consecutive days without dying!
