I recall, and this has been many MAME versions ago, that I could get a good run through a lot of stages once I had the ring (if it's a bug then it might've been active a long time ago). As for it expiring? ....Hmm. Since it helps you fire faster it is a valuable item.
I never tried to lose it on purpose.
