CRT display, and Tempest : a commentary
05/31/13 10:41 PM

I abstracted this from Dully's thread for reasons of focus and visibility.

Every picture & video I've watched of Pac-Man, the items on the screen seem a lot brighter than in MAME.

They were brighter. 15khz scan rate gives the phosphors more showtime. Plus I'm betting the luminescence curve of CRTs is different than other types of illumination technologies.

MAME's display is correct with the correct monitor; back in the early 2000s when everyone used CRT monitors on their PCs there was no question that the image could be as bright as a cabinet. Similarly, people today building MAME cabinets with 15 kHz arcade CRTs get that same bright, vivid image.

MAME's current color scheme is at least very close. I like the old AND new (more accurate) color schemes. There is some discrepancy in the above statement on display. Correctly it would be this:

Those who've used/who use any sort of 15khz CRT will produce at least close to the desired/original brightness. The electron grating/shadow mask will have a varying affect, as later models had tighter phosphor designs, hence tighter emission.

On Tempest colors:

After feedback from the main developer of avgdvg.c and some investigation:
there simply is no sparkle bit. MAME pre-108u5 was wrong.

It's intentional, stars will sparkle after finishing later levels.

I recall always seeing multi-colored and sparkly stars warping between levels. That's how I remember the original cab I played recently displaying. In the John's Arcade vid, even the later warps look all blue.... I don't know how it was done in AAE. Given the history of the developer and his various attempts at vector display emulation, I suspect he owned the game.

((Edited because I hadn't watched all of the John's Arcade vid.))

Scifi frauds. SF illuminates.
