well im grateful for your thread because i went off and did some tests of my own with the game galaga'88 (which regardless of mame settings already has a delay of 4 frames when you move your ship left or right*)
.... so, i did some tests (note: fullscreen tests only, both directdraw and direct3d were tested) with galaga'88, first of all using just vsync, and then just triple buffer.
the game plays as normal with vsync on (ie. i personally didnt notice a difference with vsync turned on or off). however, triple buffer is a different story. moving the ship left and right with triple buffer on was not good. you can really feel (and see) the input lag when you move your ship left and right.
so, i for one am gonna stick with vsync from now on.
ps. tests were done under winxp 32bit, basic onboard intel gma gfx (laptop). i tested both directdraw and direct3d, and got identical results.
*note: this isnt a mame bug
