Does nobody have an idea?
I know that for the NES, you have a certain number of color entries, but there are no definite absolute color values for them. If you write an emulator, you have to define yourself which entry in the palette shall have which RGB value. That's why every emulator has another palette: All of them are just defined by manually trying to simulate the colors of a TV.
But an NES has a color palette of 64 colors, with the last few not even used. So, it's not such a huge work to define all colors by hand.
But how is this done with games like "Street Fighter II" which can have thousands of colors? I doubt that the MAME programmers mapped each palette entry manually by observing the arcade screen. So, how are the color values read?
