I have to disagree. Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor can act. I think Liam Neeson must have gambling debts with some of the movies he's done lately, but he's certainly a serious actor. Even Hayden Christensen has done better than in the prequels.
I think the biggest problem was too much CGI and virtual sets. You see it in every movie that's tried it. Actors need to be in the proper environment, with sets and costumes and props, to turn in a good performance. Standing in a green box, staring at a dot on a stick just doesn't cut it.
The other problem is that George Lucas is kind of a crap writer. Back when he was still a nobody, the actors and people around him would call him on it, and tweak the dialog to make it work. By the time of the prequels, he was George fucking Lucas, so nobody dared challenge him and just vomited out his wooden, awkward dialog.
