By generic, I'm talking about the engine that drives the game. Audio. Video. RAM use (system AND video)... For a PC, they have to test on a variety of hardware and sacrifices have to be made to play acceptably on lower hardware, and even with high end hardware, such as video cards, you still have no less than 2 manufacturers to support, each with its own unique tweaks and such. Hell ram quantity, ram speed, cpu manufacturer, cpu speed, motherboards... I could go on and on about things that will affect performance from PC to PC.
On a console, what you see is what you get, so developers can tweak the crap out of everything, and be confident that the experience by the end user will be exactly how they envisioned/intended. This goes for online gaming as well. With a console, the only factor you have to worry about is your ISP's connection. Your buddy across town, on the same ISP, isn't as likely to have an advantage over you because of hardware/driver related lag and such on a console as can happen with a PC. Ping time can be a bi***.
Really, the #1 thing that keeps PC gaming alive is the relatively easy ability to MOD.
Just broke my personal record for number of consecutive days without dying!
